Wittgenstein, Art and Architecture is a colloquium sponsored by the Institut de Recherche en Histoire de l'Architecture (IRHA), in association with the CCA, bringing together twenty-two specialist speakers from Austria, France, the Netherlands, the United-States, Israël, and Canada. Its aim is to present recent research on the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), in relation to art and architecture. Wittgenstein's ideas on aesthetics and culture, his intimate link to the practice of the arts, architecture, and music, as well as his approach to the problems of limits and definitions, will be examined. The colloquium will also feature the house that the philosopher built for his sister in Vienna (between 1926 and 1928), a prime example in the history of architecture and the history of philosophy.
Thanks to the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, to the Canadian Centre for Architecture, to the Institut de Recherche en Histoire de l'Architecture, MONOPOLI Gallery, The Austrian Embassy in Ottawa, to Françoise and Pierre Stonborough, to the Peirce-Wittgenstein Research Group, the School of Design, the Department of Philosophy, The Faculty of Human Sciences, and the Faculty of Arts of UQAM.
This colloquium will examine the influence of journals and magazines on debates about contemporary architecture within Europe, the Americas, and beyond in the 1960s and 1970s. IRHA hopes that the papers will present a wide variety of materials and methodologies with particular reference to the material production, intellectual contribution, and critical reception of architectural periodicals.
The aim of this public Colloquium is to bring
together a group of scholars and practitioners
who have been involved in a rigorous questioning
of contemporary issues pertaining to architecture,
in particular the understanding of 'place.'
Although the word 'place' is used often in common
speech, the concept, with its long history and
capacity for profound signification, is rather
elusive. Simultaneously alluring and challenging,
it contributes in a meaningful way to the processes
of making and understanding architecture. Given
the porous boundaries encircling the discipline
and profession, six different voices from within
architecture as well as from related areas of
inquiry that inform architecture and share its
concerns, have been invited to Montreal to present
and discuss their views on the subject on 22
and 23 March 2002.
